Friendly, experienced workers are happy to share their knowledge and discoveries with new volunteers, and working in the woods is an effective way to learn about plants and ecosystems. If you can't distinguish Oregon grape from holly, an hour in Madrona Woods will teach you the difference, as well as provide you with the satisfaction of helping to make a community resource healthier, safer, and more beautiful. If you can't pull, dig, clip, or saw, the work-party crew welcomes other kinds of help: provide a snack or an item for our monthly post-work-party lunch at 1:00; donate native plants to replace invasives in the woods; sharpen our clippers, wash our gloves, or organize our toolbox. We can also use someone to carry a clipboard when we're planting to record what and where we plant for future monitoring. Especially for the daylighting: - we' d love to have some people with strong backs and arms to help us with the bridge we'll be building at the Spring Street entrance in the fall/winter 2008/09. Spend a few hours on this instead of going to the gym.
- we're looking for people to help organize and provide food for work parties.
- we'll need help with monitoring before and after the construction. Would you like to help count plants or bugs? Monitoring planting and maintencance will help other community groups and the city, state and federal agencies that must support such projects.
If you enjoy working with students, let us know and we'll notify you when one of the schools is coming to the woods to tour and do a little restoration. Get a little practice for when we pick up our more structured environmental education program with local schools when the daylighting is further along.
11/08 - We are currently looking for someone who likes to work with figures to take over as treasurer. Joan Scott has been our trusty treasurer for several years and would like to hand over the check writing and depositing to someone new. If you're interested in helping out as treasurer, contact Joan to find out what's involved. Her number is 324-6468.
To volunteer, contact Deirdre McCrary at (206) 325-9035 or use our Contact Page.
